How to find real Pokémon card prices

1. Sold prices, not asking prices. An asking price is what somebody hopes to get. A sold price is what somebody actually paid. Sites that average active listings run high, because the overpriced listings sit unsold and pile up in the average. Ask any price site where its number comes from; if the answer includes active listings, the number leans against you as a buyer.

2. Condition and grade kept separate. A raw Near Mint Charizard and a PSA 10 Charizard are different products with prices that can differ by 20x. A price that blends them tells you nothing. You should be able to see the price for the exact condition or grade tier you hold.

3. Recency you can see. Pokémon prices move fast around set rotations, reprints, and tournament results. A price without a date, or without a 30-day trend behind it, might be one stale comp from months ago.

4. Enough sales to mean something. One sale is an anecdote. A price built on two thin data points can be moved by a single unusual auction. The honest behavior when data is thin is to say so, not to publish a number anyway.
